Holy Week is upon us. We call this week holy because it is the week we recall all the sacred events which
immediately led to salvation. Today, Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion, we begin the week by remembering the
passion, beginning with Jesus’ joyful entry into Jerusalem with people welcoming Him and waving palm branches.
The last three days of the week are called the Sacred Triduum.
The Sacred Triduum begins Thursday evening as we enter into the immediate events that brought about our
salvation. The Mass of the Last Supper is celebrated. At the Last Supper, Jesus gave the disciples His Body and
Blood in the form of bread and wine and told them to “do this in memory of Me”. The Body and Blood which He
gave them that night would be given in death on the Cross the following day. Feet are washed during this
celebration to remind us that we are to carry out Jesus’ command to love by serving each other. The newly blessed
oils, which are used for the Sacraments, are presented to the Parish at the beginning of the Mass. At the end of
Mass we process the Eucharist to its place of reposition. Quietly afterwards the altar is stripped of all linens and
the faithful are invited to spend some time with the Lord before the Blessed Sacrament, recalling the words of
Jesus in the garden “could you not keep watch for one hour?” We must remember that we are not recalling these
events to re-enact history, but to realize what we have right now as a result of these past sacred events.
There is no Mass anywhere on Good Friday. Our Good Friday Liturgy (7 p.m.) begins in silence. After an
opening prayer, readings from the Sacred Scriptures are proclaimed, concluding with a reading of the Passion from
John’s Gospel. After the homily, there is a procession and veneration of the Cross. The liturgy of Good Friday ends
with a reception of Holy Communion (consecrated at the Holy Thursday Mass) and a prayer. All leave in silence.
Again this is not a history lesson, but celebrating this liturgy helps us to realize that the salvation we enjoy right
now is a result of Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection and that we are to live as a redeemed people of Christ.
Finally, the Easter Vigil and Easter: At the Easter Vigil, we transition from the darkness of the tomb to a
celebration of “light and life”, as we bless the new fire and process the newly blessed Easter Candle in to the
darkened Church singing “Light of Christ”. As all the lights go on and we sing the Easter proclamation, we realize
that we are a people who have been saved by Jesus’ dying and rising, that we are now a people of Jesus the Light.
During the celebration, we read from the Sacred Scriptures, we celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation
and Eucharist with our Elect and Candidates in the RCIA. The Easter Day Masses are joyful celebrations of the
Resurrection.
